Evo Morales Ayma President Morales was born October 26th 1959 in the village of Insallavi, in the Orinoca Canton, very close to Lake Poopó in the Oruro Department. He descended from a family of Aymara extraction. As a child he worked in agriculture and was responsible for caring for their herd of llamas. In order to be able get an education he worked as brick maker, baker and trumpet player. He attended middle school at Beltrán Ávila School of Oruro.
In 1983 he was named Secretary of Sports of his union, being this his first union office. In 1985 he was promoted to Secretary General of the said union. Since 1985 he was Executive Secretary of the Cochabamba Tropic Federation and since 1996 acted as President of the Six Federations of the Tropic of Cochabamba Committee.
In 1997 he was elected Uninominal Deputy for the Constituency 27, of Chapare. In January 2002, the neoliberal parties expelled him from Congress. In the general elections of June 2002, the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS), led by President Morales, broke all the party structures of Bolivia, to gain the support of 581 884 votes and securing 36 congressmen.
Since the municipal elections of December 2004, MAS became the primary political force in the country. In the December 2005 elections, President Morales won with a historical 53.7% of the vote, becoming the first indigenous president of Bolivia. |
